Instead of simply cancel the near-completed game, Microsoft licensed out the completion of development to Flaming Fowl Studio, an independent team comprised of former Lionhead staff, to run a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to finish the project. Lionhead put 18 months of work into the game, creating a near complete experience before the studio was shuttered by Microsoft and all of their projects were canceled on March 7th, 2016.
After the massive success of Blizzard Entertainment's Hearthstone, the development of a Fable TCG was revived in 2014, when Lionhead Studios began to collaborate with Mediatonic to create the game. Fable Fortune was initially pitched in 2008 as a mini-game to tie into Fable 2, but was eventually put aside in favor of Fable: Pub Games instead.
